Introduction to Languages

Communication - using the language - is at the core of the foreign language study.   The ability to communicate appropriately in at least one language in addition to English is becoming increasingly important in an interdependent world.   Language learners use both written and spoken forms to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes and with a variety of audiences.

Level I Courses:
This Level I course in modern foreign languages allows students to comprehend and produce simple, short sentences and ideas using memorized words and phrases in the target language.   Topics of reading and conversation center around immediate concerns and interests.   Comprehension is generally more developed than language production.   Basic communicative tasks are facilitated by memorized patterns, resulting in fewer errors.   Since the key to communicating with the ancient world is reading, students in a level I classical language course are oriented to the language through simple primary sources and passages which use appropriate levels of vocabulary and structure.   Reading comprehension is enhanced by repeating, reading aloud, reciting and writing simple sentences.   During level I study, in both modern and classical languages, students also learn to recognize people, products and viewpoints of the target culture and begin to compare native and target cultures.   Students are introduced to ways in which the target language is connected to the native language, to other disciplines and to resources beyond the classroom.

Level I Courses:
This Level II course in both modern and classical foreign languages expands the students' knowledge of structure and vocabulary so they can understand and produce more complex ideas in the target language.   Students become increasingly confident in working with authentic materials.   Students identify the products, practices and viewpoints of the target culture and learn to discuss generalizations about that culture.   Level II students are more aware of similarities and differences between target and native languages and cultures.   They also become more adept at using information and skills common to the target language which could be transferred to other disciplines.

Level III Courses:
This Level III course in both modern and classical languages prepares students to understand short passages and authentic texts on familiar topics and themes using learned vocabulary, structure and context clues.   In modern language classes, students create short messages, letters and simple conversations from sentence through paragraph length using past, present and future time.   As they develop a more sophisticated understanding of the target culture, level III modern and classical language students discuss, analyze and explain various cultural aspects.   They interpret cultural connotations of common linguistic items and, in the modern languages, begin to incorporate appropriate behaviors and gestures in language use.   Students transfer information, skills and resources from the target language to other disciplines and vice versa.   They seek opportunities to use or apply the target language outside the school environment.

Level IV Courses:
In modern foreign languages, level IV students imitate, sustain and bring to closure a wide variety of communicative tasks.   They begin to solve problems using the language and acquire new knowledge from authentic sources.   Students at this level demonstrate an increasing ability to express chronology and abstract ideas.   As students in both modern and classical languages continue to expand their knowledge of various aspects of the target culture(s), they also apply, evaluate, explain and integrate this information.   By fourth year of study, students are able to synthesize and apply information from target language sources to other disciplines and visa versa.   They independently locate target language resources and opportunities to expand language use beyond classroom experiences.Anchor

French Language Curriculum

French I:  5612

Prerequisite: none
The first in a series of French courses develops understanding and facility in speaking, reading, and writing the language.   Students learn the basic sounds while practicing vocabulary and using simple sentences in common conversation situations.   They gain a basic knowledge of contemporary French culture as they participate in language learning activities geared to developing communicative competence.

Prerequisite:   "C" average in French I; teacher approval
Students expand their knowledge of the French language and culture by refining pronunciation and understanding more complex grammatical structures.   Understanding, speaking, reading and writing the language continue to be a major objective.   Students will learn more about career possibilities for those with second language skills.

Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: "C" average in French II; teacher approval
Students continue to develop communication skills with increased emphasis on creative expression.   They explore classic and modern French literature

French IV:  5624
Credit: 1 unit
Prerequisite: "B" average in French III; teacher approval
French is the primary means of communications as students participate in an in-depth study of French history, art, and literature with an emphasis on the classics.

Spanish Curriculum

Spanish I:  5661

Prerequisite: none
The introduction to spoken and written Spanish explores the culture, life, and philosophy of the Spanish speaking world.   Students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Spanish II:  5662
Credit: 1 unit 
Prerequisite: "C" average in Spanish I; teacher approval
Spanish II continues the study from the previous year with more emphasis on speaking.   Students continue to acquire vocabulary and to explore the culture of Spain.

Spanish III:  5663

Prerequisite: "C" average in Spanish II; teacher approval
Spanish II emphasizes mastery of grammar and vocabulary leading to creative oral expression.   Students experience an in-depth study of Spanish culture and history.

Spanish IV:  5664

Prerequisite: "B" average in Spanish III; teacher approval
The advanced study of Spanish focuses on conversation, composition, translation, and interpretation of Spanish literature and pleasure reading.   This course adds emphasis to conversation and building strong skills in writing and reading.

Spanish V:  5665

Prerequisite: "B" average in Spanish IV
Students acquire a more personalized and sophisticated approach to continue developing skills acquired in previous study.   They participate in independent reading and writing.
