Speech and Language disorders often seen in the school setting include, but are not limited to:
Articulation/Phonology- sounds may be substituted, distorted, omitted and may make speech difficulty for listeners to understand
Dysfluency- often referred to as stuttering; repetition of sounds, words, parts of words, or phrases typically AFTER the age of 4; interjecting extra sounds or words; extending words; also may demonstrate secondary behaviors such as eye blinking, throat clearing, excessive fidgeting
Voice- hoarsness/raspiness; voice breaks; sudden pitch changes; voice may be too soft or too loud; hypernasality- too much air is escaping from the nasal passages; hyponasality- too little air is coming through the nasal passages
Language- expressive language disorders (difficulty getting their meaning across to others through what they are saying); receptive language disorders (difficulty understanding messages coming from others)
Speech and language skills can be worked on at anytime- not just in the therapy setting. Weekly homework is provided- please work on these activities with your child so that you may see their progress.
Please feel free to contact me at anytime with any concerns regarding your child and their speech and language development.
