Overview:  A student enrolled in the masonry program will be exposed to the NCCER Core and the four levels of carpentry. This will be accomplished through class assignments, discussions, and practical applications of skills learned in the major units of study gained from the estimation and the use of actual materials used in residential construction.

  3. Rough in Plumbing, Wiring & Insulation
  4. Finish Work
  5. Advanced Building Preparation
  6. Advanced Foundation & Framing
  7. Advanced Plumbing & Wiring

Length of the Course:  This course requires two years for completion. Students may enroll during their sophomore, junior, and senior years. This course is offered in the morning and afternoon sessions. Adult students are accepted on a space available basis.

Opportunities in the Field:  Job opportunities for carpenters are expected to be plentiful through the beginning of the next century. Approximately 100,000 job openings will become available each year as carpenters transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force. The increased demand for carpenters will create additional job openings.

Accessibility:  Open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors or adults who have a high school diploma, GED, or are working toward their GED.

Affordable Cost:  United Technical Center offers low-cost seat fees for adult students. Area high school students can qualify for a 13th year tuition waiver.

Career Planning:  UTC offers opportunities for career counseling and assistance in job placement.

Articulation Agreement:  Cooperative agreements with institutions throughout the nation allow for students to earn college credit in some areas. These agreements give students the opportunity to form a 2 + 2 educational experience, in which students complete the first two years while in high school and enter an associate degree 
program the following two years. EDGE Credit is also available for career and technical courses.

Developmental Education:  UTC offers refresher courses in reading, writing, and math prior to enrollment or while taking technical classes.

Organizations:  Skills USA and National Technical Honor Society(NTHS) are sponsered by UTC for the advancement and recognition of individual student skills and academics.

Location:  UTC is located on Rt. 19 North of Clarksburg. Take the West Pike Street exit off Rt. 50 West of Clarksburg and travel approximately 2 miles toward Shinnston.
