                                           Policies and Expectations

                                                       Mrs. Leon

It is with high energy and hope that I welcome you to what I believe will be a spectacular 2017-18 school year. I have been spending my summer vacation planning some fun and exciting things for this year’s science class and truly believe that we have an electrifying year ahead of us! Throughout the year, we will be learning about chemical interactions, cells and heredity, the human body, motion and forces, and finally the Earth! As in the past few years at WI Middle School, all grade levels will be focusing on writing across the curriculum. In science, we will be working with various styles of writing including journaling, short answer responses, essays, and lab reports. We will also be working on organizational techniques to help 8th graders transition to 9th grade as smoothly as possibly.

Student Supplies

All materials for class are listed below, and students should make sure they are bringing these to class everyday. Due to the levy, all materials will be provided for each student. Yea! All assignments that are done in and out of the classroom will be kept in a 2 pocket folder.

  • Notebooks or loose-leaf paper
  • Pencils
  • One 2 pocket folder

Classroom Rules

While in my classroom, students are expected to follow certain procedures and guidelines. If they do not follow the rules for both the school and my classroom, then the WIMS Discipline Policy will be put into effect. Actions that are more severe in nature will result in an automatic trip to the office.

  • Be on time, in your seat, and ready to go before the tardy bell rings.
  • Be Respectful – Say or do nothing that will hurt or offend another person.  Use appropriate language at all times.  Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
  • Be Responsible – Have all books, materials, homework and assignments here at school, completed on time.  Be where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there.
  • Sharpen your pencil before the tardy bell rings.
  • Use the restroom between classes and during lunch. Please do not ask unless it is an emergency.
  • Listen and follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Be Curious – Ask questions when you don’t understand something!
  • Participation is not an option. It is an expectation.
  • Stay on task!

Make-Up Work

If any student misses class, he or she is responsible for getting the make-up work written down in his or her agenda and getting any needed worksheets from me. Make-up work is due in the same amount of days that the student misses; therefore, if the student misses two days, the student has two days to complete the work. This time limit also includes any tests that the students missed. Any work is considered late if it is turned in after the allotted number of make-up days.

Late Work Policy

Students must turn in ALL assignments ON TIME, which means the day that it is due. If the work is not turned in on time, students will receive a zero on that assignment. I understand that extenuating circumstances can occur. In this case, I need to be notified immediately so that the student doesn’t pay for it by receiving a grade cut.

All assignments are due on the due date with limited exceptions. Communication is vital. I need to be notified about particular circumstances that might affect your ability to turn in work. In addition, cheating will NOT be tolerated! You may get help from another student, but you are NOT allowed to copy their work. Any cheating will result in an automatic zero for that grade. Plus, school policy dictates that students caught cheating for the first time will have a team conference, a call home, referral to the office, and 2 one-hour ASD sessions.

Participation can always be given for a grade. Periodically, I will give students grades on participating in class discussions, giving answers to problems, or working cooperatively during group assignments. Please make sure that you contribute in class! Most of all, remember that this is your classroom, too! Please feel comfortable discussing or bringing any topics or ideas to me that you feel are interesting or important. Your input is an important part of making this classroom work!

Please sign if you have read and understand the above policies and expectations handout.
