Mrs. Jones shared comments from different staff members on the curriculums and programs that are being implemented in the school. She shared that many primary level teachers are excited about Haggerty and the growth they are starting to see in their students. One teacher stated that in the two and a half weeks she has implemented the program she has seen an improvement in her students’ handwriting. Another teacher mentioned they liked how they program had “I do, We do, You do” activities. The teacher can model the activity or concept, then the students practice it with her, and then they complete one on their own. Mrs. Jones also purchased Mystery Science for the school and Frax for grades 2nd-5th. Mystery Science has engaging lessons and hands on activities for the students that are aligned to our standards. Frax is a program that is in a game format that teaches students about fractions. The program was tested out through a free trial last year in 5th grade. We are excited to start using it.
The beginning of the year i-Ready diagnostics have been completed by all students. Mrs. Jones stated that comprehension, vocabulary, geometry, and measurement and data are areas that need the most improvement.
We are bridging the learning gaps with many different resources. In 3rd grade, there is now a full-time interventionist. Title One teacher, Ms. Rittenhouse and Mrs. Forinash, are working with the intermediate grades. Mrs. Jones mentioned that from 3:00-6:00 on September 23th there will be a Data Night for teachers. Intermediate teachers will also be using the WVGSA Test Authorings and Modules throughout the year. The After School program this year is called Whizdom Club. This will be for students in grades 3rd to 5th that need just a little extra push in Math and Reading. The students will be prechosen by the teachers in each of the grades.
Mrs. Jones stated that PBIS will be staying the same as it has been.
PTA met on September 8th at 3:00 in the cafeteria. They will be holding the Pumpkin Decorating Contest once again on October 20th to October 24th. Students will bring in change and vote for their favorite pumpkin. Ally Maxwell, PTA President, brought up the idea of doing monthly incentives for both teachers and students. All attendees agreed and this will start this month.
September 26th is National PTA Day. All students in attendance that day will receive a popsicle purchased by PTA.
Over the summer the school received a new basketball hoop that was purchased by PTA. A bench was purchased and placed on the bottom playground. Mrs. Jones created a new STEAM classroom in the basement. The project was completed this summer with the help of some parent and student volunteers. Student Council would like to raise money to purchase shade for the playgrounds.
