School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. Most of these deaths and injuries didn’t happen in a crash, but while students were getting on or off the bus.
That’s why parents and students need to work together to make bus safety a daily habit. Here are the tips every family should review:
Wait for the Bus to Stop
Students should stay back until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals it’s safe to enter. Rushing toward the bus can be dangerous.
Keep a Safe Distance
The bus driver can see students best when they’re standing back. Keep space between you and the bus while waiting, and always choose a safe place away from traffic and the street. Parents should monitor students while waiting on the bus.
Watch for Other Drivers
Not every driver follows the law about stopping for school buses. Remind your child to be aware of street traffic and never assume cars will stop.
Step Away After Exiting
When students get off, they should walk ten giant steps away from the bus. This moves them out of blind spots. Encourage them to always use the handrail when getting on or off.
Protect and Watch Out
Little choices make a big difference. Stay alert, protect yourself, and watch out—because safety is a team effort between families, students, and drivers. Any changes to the students’ arrival and dismissal should be clearly communicated to the school.
