Day 3 Writing: What is your favorite winter activity? Why is it the best?
Day 4 Writing: What is the best winter treat (for example, hot chocolate, cookies, soup)? Explain your answer.
Day 5 Writing: You find a pair of magical winter boots that can take you anywhere in the world. Where do you go on your first adventure?
Write 2 sentences for each prompt.
2nd and 3rd Grades
Day 1

2nd Grade Writing Activities

Math K-3
- Snow Measurement & Graphing: Use a ruler to measure the depth of the snow outside every hour. Record the numbers on a chart and make a line graph to see how fast the snow piles up.
- Sledding Physics: Test how weight and seating position affect how far or fast a sled travels down a hill. Measure the distance with paces or a tape measure, then compare the results.
- Snowflake Symmetry: Fold a square piece of paper, cut out shapes along the edges, and unfold it. Look at the finished paper snowflake to find lines of symmetry and geometric shapes.
- Snow Melt: Bring inside your home a small bowl of snow. Calculate how much time passes before the snow completely melts.
- Count and Clap: Count how many times you can clap in 30 seconds and in 60 seconds.
- Count how many jumping jacks you can do in 30 seconds and in 60 seconds.
- Count how many squats you can do in 30 seconds and in 60 seconds.
- Shape Scavenger Hunt: Look for different shapes in your home. Draw a picture of the item and tell the shape. For example, your dining room table may be a circle shape.
Math K-3 Additional Activities
- Guess My Number: Play guess the number with a family member. Take turns writing down a number and then providing clues until the other person guesses the number. For example, for the number 15, the clues might be greater than 5 but less than 20, the age of someone in high school, an odd number, etc.
- Verbal Story Problems: With a family member take turns making up verbal word problems to practice adding and subtracting. For example, Mr. Grimes gave a student 5 stickers. Mrs. Rose gave the student 5 stickers. How many stickers did the student have in all?
- It snowed 7 inches in 2 days. On the third day, 3 inches of snow melted. How much snow is left?
- High Low Game: If you have a deck of cards, you can play the High Low game. Deal all the cards to each player. With cards face down, each player turns over his/her top card. The highest number wins.
Choose at least one math activity to do each Non-Traditional Day. Write down the name of the activity and have an adult sign.
