Looking ahead as we roll into September:
School is closed on Monday, September 1, for Labor Day.
On Tuesday, the gifted program resumes for the year. First and second-grade gifted students attend the program at Victory Elementary on Mondays, third-grade students on Tuesdays, fourth-grade students on Wednesdays, and fifth-grade students on Thursdays.
Our first group of Pre-K students arrive on Tuesday, September 2. The second group will attend on Wednesday, September 3. All Pre-K students will attend on Thursday, September 4.
Thursday, September 4, will be the first day we have all 739 students attending school at the same time! And that is cause for celebration! We have declared that day as Spirit Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear JES or Little Chiefs apparel or anything in our school colors of royal blue, red, and gray.
We have an online spirit shop open 24/7/365 if you ever need some spirit wear - https://1stplace.sale/104088. For anything you purchase, the school receives a small commission.
Also, on September 4, the PTA will be popping and selling popcorn to students for the first time this year. The price is 50 cents a bag, and students can eat it during their regular snack time. PTA pops for us every other Thursday.
Speaking of the PTA, they are always working for the school and the students. We have only been in school for a couple of weeks, and they have already hosted a pool party for students and their families, bought every student their take-home folder and at least one notebook for class, sponsored breakfast for 97 at our first staff meeting, and now they are volunteering their time to pop popcorn. Their good deeds go on all year long! You really should join them. Membership forms will come home next week, or you can join right here - https://johnsonelementarypta.givebacks.com/shop
Our Local School Improvement Council (LSIC) is our other school/parent/community group. It is very informative and very special. Ask any member, and they will tell you. We are having our first meeting of the year on Monday, September 8, in the library at 3:00 PM. If you can make it, please join us. You learn a lot about Johnson at LSIC. The group meets once every 9 weeks (four times a year).
Things are starting to take shape into routines at 601 Johnson Avenue. We appreciate everyone working together to get the year started off right. Enjoy the long weekend, and we will see you in September!
