Morning Arrival

  • Student access to the building begins at 6:55 AM at the gym door.

  • Students remain in the gym until 7:25 AM, when they report to their homerooms.

  • Breakfast - hot or Grab and Go (cold) - is available for K-5th-grade students from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM.

  • Breakfast for Pre-K begins at 8:00 AM, and the whole Pre-K grade level walks down to the cafeteria together.

  • The front loop serves as the bus lane. No entrance information is posted.

  • Drivers must enter via City Park Drive (next to the high school) and proceed around to the parking lot or drop-off lane.

  • The drop-off lane is a fast option and should only be used by students who can arrive independently. Parents in the drop-off lane should not exit the vehicle. If your child needs assistance, you should park in the lot and assist your child.

  • Directions from our school crossing guards, Mr. Jack and Mr. Tanner, should be followed.

  • 5th-grade Safety Patrols will man all crosswalks. Pedestrians should wait for their cue to cross.

  • The gym doors close at 7:55 AM (at the tardy bell), and our instructional day begins.

  • Parents arriving after 7:55 AM should park their car in the lot and walk their child to the main office to be signed in.

Note: Parents leaving a student alone outside of the locked building will be called or addressed by the administration and notified that educational neglect is reportable.

Afternoon Dismissal

The most hectic time of day is the afternoon dismissal. Because students are in motion, we cannot guarantee changes past 1:15 PM, as writing bus notes, leaving phone messages, locating staff, and radioing different locations are required.

As with morning arrival, the front loop serves as the bus lane. Drivers should never enter this area.

We dismiss in multiple shifts:

  • We have an early (2:30 PM), middle (2:45 PM), and late bus bell (2:55 PM) where students meet in the gym before loading their buses.

A parent or guardian must be present at the bus stop for afternoon drop-off for students in Pre-K and K.

  • We have a Pre-K walker (2:30 PM), a Kindergarten walker (2:35 PM), and a 1st-5th grade dismissal time (2:40 PM).

Due to our large enrollment, we dismiss from several locations. If you are picking up multiple children, we suggest going to the door where your youngest exits, then getting your older child.

Walker Dismissal Doors:

  • Pre-K and K - Pre-K/K wing door to the right of the flagpole

  • 2nd and 5th Grade - main entrance doors

  • 1st and 4th Grade - interior gym doors

  • 3rd Grade - stairwell closest to the front loop

Note: Parents consistently not picking their child up on time will be called or addressed by the administration and notified that educational neglect is reportable. Emergencies are understandable.

Communications

Note: The only official school communication is communication conducted between the home and the main office. Absence notes, dismissal changes, etc., should be directed there. Contacting the teacher on a classroom-based app is not official.

  • Individual teachers and grade levels may use their own communication system (SeeSaw, Remind, Bloomz, etc.), but not all teachers do. That is teacher choice.

  • Official school text messages are sent from Mrs. Holbert and begin with “JES Administration.”

  • The county office sends Harrison County Schools text messages beginning with “Harrison County BOE,” and they appear on the same thread.

  • There is no sign-up form for text messages like a typical mailing list. The system uses contact information for legal guardians and staff from official school computer records (WVEIS).

  • If there are issues receiving text messages, contact the school to update your information. There may be a clerical error or an old number on file.

  • The Harrison County Schools website is https://www.harcoboe.net/.

  • Johnson Elementary School’s website is https://www.harcoboe.net/o/jes.

  • The school Facebook page is Johnson Elementary School - Bridgeport, WV.

  • The PTA Facebook page is Johnson Elementary School PTA, Bridgeport, WV.

Schoolwide Rules That Are Consistently Enforced

  • Siblings (school-age or younger) are not permitted to attend school activities for your other child. We try to make the event about that child.

  • Students cannot walk home from school at the elementary level.

  • Students not riding the bus in the afternoon must be picked up by a parent/guardian/approved contact at the grade-level specific dismissal doors. Students are not released to the parking lot.

  • We do not accept personal deliveries.

  • Cell phones and smart watches cannot be used during school hours and must be kept in backpacks or lockers.

  • We are not permitted to pass out invitations.

  • For school parties, entry is granted only to those specifically listed on the master office list provided by the teachers.

  • We do not accept teacher requests from parents.

Student Concerns

If you have a need or concern for your child, contact your child’s homeroom teacher first. If someone else is called, you will be routed back to the teacher first.

Medical Information

  • If your child needs over-the-counter medicine at school, it has to be brought in by the parent/guardian and can be given with a parent's note.

  • Students must be fever-free for 24 hours, without fever-reducing medication, before returning to school.

Additional Bits and Pieces

Each grade level will hold at least two parent involvement activities each year, and all parents are invited to attend.

The school has three classroom parties a year:

  • Halloween (with a parade)

  • Christmas

  • Valentine’s Day

Johnson Elementary does not conduct graduation ceremonies for Pre-K, Kindergarten, or 5th Grade; however, grade-level celebrations are held.
