2026-2027 Non-Traditional Instructional Day (NTI Day) Packet

Not applicable to Pre-K students

What Is an NTI Day?

If Harrison County Schools announces a Non-Traditional Instructional (NTI) Day due to inclement weather, students in grades K–5 are expected to complete the assigned NTI activities. NTI activities count as instructional learning and do not have to be made up. Each county is allotted five NTI Days per school year. Activities are designed to be accessible to all students. No technology, special materials, or supplies are required.

Student Directions

For each NTI Day:

  1. Get a piece of paper.
  2. Write your first and last name at the top.
  3. Write “NTI Day” under your name.
  4. Complete all three activities.
  5. Check your work.
  6. Place your assignment in your red take-home folder.
  7. Repeat these steps for each NTI Day.

Assignments

NTI Day 1:

  1. Create a Winter Invention: Draw and name an invention that would make a snowy day easier or more fun. Write 1-3 sentences explaining what it does.
  2. Build a Snow Day Schedule: Create a schedule for your perfect snow day. Include at least five activities and the time you would do each one.
  3. Organize It: Choose a drawer, shelf, closet, toy box, or other area that needs organizing. Organize it and have an adult write down what you did and how well you did it.

NTI Day 2:

  1. Move for 20: Complete at least 20 minutes of physical activity. You may walk, dance, stretch, play outside, do exercises, or play a physical game. Write one sentence about what you did.
  2. Three Things: Write three things you are thankful for and explain why each one is important to you.
  3. Design Your Dream Snowman: Draw a detailed snowman. Give it a name and write about what makes your snowman special.

NTI Day 3:

  1. Help at Home: Complete a helpful job around your house. Have an adult write down what you did and how well you did it.
  2. Fitness Challenge: Complete 10 jumping jacks, 10 toe touches, 10 squats, and 10 arm circles. Repeat as many times as you safely can. Write how many rounds you completed.
  3. Snowy Math: Draw 20 snowballs. Group them in different ways and write the addition or multiplication equations that match your groups.

NTI Day 4:

  1. Compliment Someone: Give three genuine compliments to people in your home. Write down what you said and how they responded.
  2. Read and Retell: Read a book, magazine, newspaper, or other book you have at home. Draw a picture of your favorite part and write or tell someone what happened.
  3. Write a Snow Day Story: Write a short story about the best snow day ever. Include a beginning, middle, and ending.

NTI Day 5:

  1. Number Hunt: Find numbers in your house. Record at least 10 numbers and put them in order from smallest to largest.
  2. My Johnson Memory: Draw and write about one of your favorite memories from Johnson Elementary.
  3. Winter Survival: Imagine you are stuck in a snowstorm. Draw or list five things you would want to have with you and explain why.
