West Virginia Virtual School (WVVS) Courses

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF 6-12 STUDENTS

To request virtual school courses for your child, the parent/guardian should contact the school's principal or counselor. Decisions for enrollment into virtual learning are approved by the school's principal and in consideration of the student's individual abilities and circumstances. Most WVVS courses are very rigorous and require strong academic skills and a great desire to learn. Courses are available to students statewide including public, private and home school students. Students must be registered at a local public school system in WVEIS as at least a part-time student to register for courses. All WVVS course communication occurs via the student k12 email address in Office 365.

The WVVS partners with county school systems to supplement current educational plans for reasons such as scheduling conflicts or to expand course offerings. WVVS instructors are certified to teach in West Virginia and are hired and evaluated through the West Virginia Department of Education(WVDE). The assigned instructor for a particular course may or may not be an employee of Harrison County Schools. Students may be assigned to a teacher from another school, county or state by the WVVS.

The virtual course grade and progress will be available to the school counselor and principal to ensure that student grades for WV Virtual School courses are entered in the WVEIS data system. No changes can be made to the online course grade by local school personnel. Letter grades assigned to a student's transcript must follow the WV Uniform Grading Scale set by WVDE Policy 2510. Questions or concerns about course grades are to be directed to the assigned WVVS course instructor.

To register for a WVVS course, please contact your school counselor or principal who can help you begin the process. The conversation should center around what is in the best educational interest of your child. WVVS courses are delivered on grade-level, and require a strong desire for learning on the student’s part. Parents should not assist students with graded assignments, quizzes, or tests in order to maintain the integrity of the course and the learning process. For those students interested in full-time virtual school, required courses will include a minimum of the core areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, and ELA/Reading while elective courses should be chosen based on student interest and need. If approved for full-time virtual school, the student will remain in the WVVS courses for the entire semester, with the total courses for the semester not exceeding 7 for Middle School students, and 8 for High School students. A student cannot be withdrawn from a virtual course once enrolled for the semester.
