Annual Discipline Report –
Looker; WVEIS doesn’t have a great way to track discipline/not user friendly. Looked at 689 discipline referrals – entire year last year 1333. We’re past the mid-point of the year and we are lower than previous year. We have a LOT of lunch detentions and higher than average suspensions, however. Last year 41 suspensions, this year is at 71 – the use of lunch detention and suspension seems to be affective- the primary issue is “vaps” in school and on buses. Many of the suspensions have lead to students being transferred to Evolution.
Additional Updates – No additional updates
Officer/Committee Reports
Weekend food boxes- 24 per week. (approx. 864/year) – Come from the food bank. County office has started providing small prepackaged food boxes. Every week 24 students take home weekend food boxes. If we made it more known, the number would be higher.
Concerns, Suggestions, and Points Raised – The state has said that students who’ve taken credit recovery must now have a letter grade instead of a “P”. Around 115 have been completed. This will affect students’ gpa. No credit recovery at RCB this summer, but it will be happening at BHS.
Concern – we do have a strong need for credit recovery and no longer have grant funding. Funds are needed to maintain, at least, the after school credit recovery courses. All of the state and federal cuts are having a drastic affect on education as a whole. Luckily, we have our levy. We have over 200 service and professional employees.
Announcements
WINS!
February 13 – 15, we had 3 students audition and participate in the annual WVU Honor Band Festival. The three students were Ryan Shriver, Kaitlyn Fordyce, and Aiden Cunningham. The WVU Honor Band had over 600 students from WV and all of our surrounding states audition after being recommended by their director to fill out 3 honor bands of about 80 each.
On February 26th – 27th, RCB Hosted the All-County Band for Harrison County. In addition to hosting, RCB had 13 students audition and participate.
On March 6th – 8th, RCB had one student earn a spot in the WV All State Band; Ryan Shriver. This All-State event was held at the annual Music Educators Conference in Charleston, WV. Ryan is the first student since 2019 to successfully win an All-State spot from RCB.
On March 11th, the entire RCB Band traveled to the Canaday Creative Arts Center on the WVU Campus in Morgantown, WV to participate in a side-by-side rehearsal with the WVU Wind Symphony (the top of all the WVU bands) as well as participate in masterclasses on their specific instruments by WVU Faculty and music education students.
The Region X Band festival will be March 26th at Bridgeport High School. RCB will perform at 1:00pm
Every year in AP Gov, students work on a "Civic Engagement Project". Several years ago, I had a student create "Drums Not Drugs." He took the drumline to NFI and talked to them about drug prevention. One of my current seniors was in the audience back then, and he has decided to pick up the project this year. He will be taking the drumline down to NFI in April. He even got a business to donate to cover some of his cost. It has happened two time in the intervening years. This year feels special though because it is students creating a drug prevention legacy. This is entire student generated and led. All I do is help connect them with resources. I didn't even suggest the project. I admire the passion for the project.
My 3rd year students put on a simple play in Spanish and did an outstanding job. They felt they did such a good job that they decided to put on another play before the year ends.
