To become a substitute teacher you must have a four-year bachelor's degree to receive a permit to substitute teach.

1. To take the online course, register at the West Virginia Department of Education https://wvde.state.wv.us/elearning

2. Fill out a substitute classroom teacher application

3. Items required with the application are:

4. Three (3) references with correct email addresses

5. Resume

6. Color copy of your official transcript

When your online course is complete along with your application and the permit from the WVDE, you will be scheduled for an interview.

Navigate to https://wveis.k12.wv.us/certportal/ and complete the information.

Upon receipt of a WVLearns login and a password, individuals are to complete the following steps to complete registration for the WVDE WVLearns Initial Substitute training course as well as other WVLearns courses currently available for self-registration:

Navigate to https://wveis.k12.wv.us/registration/ to complete course registration.

Review all information before attempting to register for a course:

• Select the "Register" button from the top of the screen.

• Select your role from the drop-down menu.

• Select a course associated with your role.

• Enrollment is limited to two courses.

• You will not have the ability to delete a course selection.

• Submit your registration

Navigate to https://wveis.k12.wv.us/registration/ to complete course registration.

Registration Verification:

• Verify that you have been enrolled in a WVLearns course by going back to http://wvlearns.k12.wv.us

• Log into the site.

• If you have registered for a course, your course will appear on your home screen as a photo clip with the course title at the bottom of the photo.

If you are a non-West Virginia resident who is not employed or under contract with a WV school system, please contact Donna Landin at dlandin@k12.wv.us prior to establishing a CertPortal account and prior to registering for a course. There is a $200.00 registration fee per course for all non-West Virginia residents who are not employed or under contract with a WV school system. Course registration fees must be received prior to the opening day of a course session.

• All interested 7-week course participants may enroll for a maximum of two 7-week courses per session.
