The 2025 Harrison County Student Achievement Awards honored outstanding students from across the county on a special night of recognition and celebration.
The Harrison County Student Achievement Program was created in 1992. Its goal is to celebrate the success of students in public and private high schools and to honor former students from Harrison County who have gone on to do great things in their careers. The program hopes to encourage students to work hard and reach their highest potential.
Since it began, the program has given more than $500,000 in scholarships to over 1,000 students. This year, many students were recognized for their hard work and achievements. These students have shown excellence in school and represent the best of Harrison County.
2025 Davis-Jackson Alumni Award: Phil Cunningham
This year’s Davis-Jackson Alumni Award was presented to Phil Cunningham, a proud graduate of Liberty High School and Salem College. Phil has lived a truly inspiring life, marked by strength, determination, and humor. He was a standout athlete in football and track and even trained for four Olympic Games. Though injuries stopped him from competing, he never gave up.
Phil has also overcome incredible challenges. He has survived an earthquake, been struck by lightning, hit by cars twice, had a stroke, and lost both legs due to a serious illness. Through it all, Phil has kept a strong faith and a great sense of humor. His story reminds us that no matter what life brings, we can keep going with courage and a smile.
