SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Things You Should Know
Your child is 70 times more likely to get to school safely on a school bus than in a car.
Four to six children lose their lives every year to an accident involving a school bus.
Most of these incidents happen to children between four to seven when they’re outside the bus.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Safety Tips for Drivers
❤️ Drive slowly in school zones and bus stops.
✔️ Be alert. Look for children running to the bus stop, especially without sidewalk.
✔️ Double check for children when backing out of your driveway or garage.
Safety Tips for Parents and Children
Never walk behind a school bus.
10 feet away: When crossing in front of a bus, stay 10 feet away from the bus and make eye contact with the driver.
Wait for the driver to stop the bus and give the ‘ok’ for getting on board.
The bus stop is not for running around or playing.
Flashing Lights
Flashing Lights are the same as traffic lights at an intersection.
Yellow lights mean the bus is slowing down, so prepare to stop.
Red lights are used when the bus has come to a stop. A stop-arm will also extend from the driver’s side of the bus. It is illegal to pass a bus with red lights and the stop arm out.
