Students at Liberty Middle School and Robert C. Byrd High School are getting a delicious new lunch choice — Smart Mouth Pizza, a fresh, personal pizza made right in their own school cafeterias.

The launch week runs October 20–23, and both schools are excited to introduce this fun and flavorful menu option.

Liberty Middle School is making history as the first school in West Virginia to serve Smart Mouth Pizza.

  • Monday, October 20: Staff will take part in training and sample the new pizzas.

  • Tuesday, October 21: About 300 pizzas will be made and served as a new lunch choice for students, along with the regular menu.

Robert C. Byrd High School will follow as the first high school in West Virginia to offer Smart Mouth Pizza.

  • Wednesday, October 22: Staff will receive training and taste samples.

  • Thursday, October 23: About 300 pizzas will be served to students as part of the lunch lineup.

Smart Mouth Pizza is providing the equipment and hands-on training needed for school nutrition teams to make fresh, personal pizzas every day. Each school will have its own oven just for pizza.

All Smart Mouth recipes meet federal nutrition standards, and each crust is made from whole-grain honey wheat flour.

Students will start by choosing between pepperoni or cheese pizzas, but more choices are on the way. Over time, schools may add options like calzones, stuffed cheesy bread, veggie, buffalo chicken, Hawaiian, cheeseburger, pepperoni and sausage, and more. The school cooks will see which types students like best and add those new selections from time to time, along with the original two favorites.

Thanks in part to the Harrison County Schools Excess Levy, these pizzas are being offered free of charge to all students.

For every 10 pizzas prepared, Smart Mouth donates one pizza to needy students across the country. With both Liberty and RCB starting out by making about 600 pizzas a day, that means 60 pizzas will go to students in need each day. Each school may gradually increase the number of pizzas it makes, depending on how popular the pizzas become and how many the staff can make fresh each day.

Nutrition Director Steve Gibson said,

“We’re proud to be the first schools in West Virginia to launch Smart Mouth Pizza. It’s exciting to bring something new and fun to our students while keeping it healthy and free for everyone. This is a great example of how we continue to invest in our students’ well-being.”
