Board of Education Highlights Strong Community Support and Student Success at November 18 Meeting

Harrison County Schools celebrated major giving, student achievements, and important project updates during the Board of Education meeting held on November 19. The meeting showed how students, staff, and community partners continue to work together to support the district.

Medbrook Children’s Charity Donates $50,000 to Support Students

Medbrook Children’s Charity presented a total donation of $50,000 to help students and families across the county.
This support includes:

  • $15,000 for school nurses

  • $15,000 for families facing housing or basic needs

  • $20,000 for adaptive equipment for students

The charity has given more than $1.1 million to the school system over the past 26 years. District leaders thanked the organization for helping students stay healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

Jody Sperry Receives State Leadership Award

Jody Sperry received the Excellence in School Nursing Leadership Award from the state school nurses’ association.
The board recognized her for her leadership, daily care for students, and commitment to school health.
The nurse explained how the Medbrook fund supports many student needs, including glasses, medicine, and dental care.

Liberty Middle Football Team Honored for Undefeated Season

The Liberty Middle School Mountaineers football team was recognized for an undefeated season and a conference championship in their first year after consolidation.
Coaches praised the players for their teamwork, strong discipline, and positive attitude.
Parents were also thanked for their support throughout the season.

Liberty Middle Cross Country Champion Recognized

The board honored a Liberty Middle School student who earned the title of Mid Mountain 10 girls' cross country champion.
Coaches described her as a strong leader who encourages every runner and sets a positive example for others.

South Harrison High FFA Students Earn National and State Awards

South Harrison High School’s FFA chapter was recognized for several major accomplishments, including:

  • Two teams earned Bronze at the National FFA Convention

  • Two students earning individual Silver awards

  • A chapter officer winning first place at the West Virginia Cattleman’s Classic

Board members praised the FFA program for teaching leadership, responsibility, and real-world skills.

Superintendent Shares Community and School Updates

The superintendent highlighted several positive district efforts:

  • The district donated 40 cases of potatoes to local missions, food pantries, and warming stations.

  • Levy funds continue to support 4-H programs, including a recent family dinner planned and prepared by students.

  • High schools put on impressive productions of The Little Mermaid.

  • Schools are using new strategies to improve student attendance.

Finance and Facility Progress Moves Forward

District leaders shared updates on financial planning and construction projects:

  • The district is earning higher interest by using the State Treasury Investment Pool.

  • The new elementary school is nearing completion.

  • New classrooms at Simpson Elementary are ready for furniture.

  • HVAC systems across the district are being reviewed to help plan future improvements.

  • Playground upgrades are set for spring.

The district also expects news on School Building Authority funding in December.

Career Center: Preparing for Career Fair and Program Plans

The United Technical Center will hold a Career Fair on December 11 with more than 30 vendors.
Construction projects are continuing, and enrollment remains strong.
The board also discussed new ideas to help students enter career pathways earlier.

Board Approves Consent Items and Facilities Plan

The board approved all consent items and the annual update to the Comprehensive Facilities Plan.
By improving older buildings instead of replacing them, the district has avoided millions in potential costs.
