Full Meeting Recap

The Harrison County Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Board Room in Clarksburg. The meeting was called to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Special Recognitions and Presentations

The Board recognized Megan Sutton, a sophomore at Robert C. Byrd High School, for representing West Virginia in the 137th Tournament of Roses Parade. Megan was selected as one of 300 students nationwide to perform in the 2026 Rose Bowl Bands of America Honor Band. She shared highlights from her experience, including rehearsals and travel with her family.

The Board then recognized Elementary Math Field Day winners. Students in fourth and fifth grade were honored for first, second, and third place finishes, along with alternates. Parents and principals were invited forward for photos and recognition.

Next, Middle School Math Field Day winners were recognized for grades six through eight. Students from Bridgeport, Liberty, South Harrison, and Lincoln middle schools were honored. Parents and principals were again recognized for their support.

The final recognition was for High School Math Field Day winners. Students in grades nine through twelve were recognized for their performance at the county level. These students will represent Harrison County Schools at the Regional Math Field Day on March 21, 2026, at University High School, with the goal of advancing to the state competition.

Following recognitions, Lola Brown, Federal Programs Supervisor, presented an update on the English Learner (EL) Program. She reviewed priority needs and action steps from the EL Program Evaluation Committee. Updates included professional development through the BE GLAD training, collaboration time for EL teachers, shared resource folders, support for secondary students on paths to graduation, and improved communication with EL families. She also shared next steps and answered Board questions.

There were no delegations.

Superintendent’s Update

The Superintendent shared updates that had been sent to Board members by email, including information related to curriculum, facilities, finance, personnel, and other operational areas. An additional out-of-state travel request for Lincoln High School FFA was noted as part of the update.

Consent Items

The Board approved all consent items, including:

  • Meeting minutes from December 16, 2025

  • Financial transactions

  • Open enrollment and transfer approvals

  • A purchase order for contracted speech therapy services due to staffing vacancies

All consent items passed by a unanimous vote.

New Business

The Board approved out-of-state travel study requests, including FFA travel and athletic travel. One Board member voted against the motion; the motion carried.

Old Business

The Board approved an amended request for out-of-state professional leave, allowing in-person or online conference fees only for nurses attending the National Association of School Nurses Conference.

Personnel

Personnel recommendations for professional, service, and extracurricular staff were approved as presented.

Board Member Comments

Board members thanked students, families, teachers, and administrators for attending. Appreciation was shared for staff presentations and student achievements. Board members also shared personal remarks and well wishes for the new semester.
