If you missed the April 21 2026, Harrison County Board of Education meeting, here’s a quick rundown of what happened.
The night started on a high note with student recognitions. The Board honored students from across Harrison County who earned All-State honors in choir, band, and orchestra, along with students who received top ratings at Solo & Ensemble Festival events. It was a proud moment for students, families, and music teachers across the county.
Next, Johnson Elementary students shared their “No Place for Hate” program. Fifth grade student leaders talked about how they work with younger students using books, games, and discussions that focus on kindness, inclusion, and treating others with respect. The students did a great job presenting and showed strong leadership skills.
The superintendent then gave updates on several topics, including school visits, testing season, facilities projects, personnel, technology, and United Technical Center. UTC shared strong SkillsUSA competition results, with students earning medals and several moving on to the national competition.
Much of the meeting focused on the district budget. Board members reviewed fund balances, rising costs, and budget projections for the coming year. They also discussed the current medical allotment payment process and possible future options for how those funds are paid. No vote was taken, and no changes were approved during this meeting.
The Board also approved regular business items such as meeting minutes, financial transactions, transfer requests, travel requests, levy rates, and purchasing items.
Members spent time discussing iReady and how it is being used in schools for benchmark testing, reading supports, and student progress monitoring. More discussion on that topic may come later.
After the executive session, the Board voted to keep the South Harrison High School distance learning paraprofessional position. The rest of the personnel agenda was then approved.
Before adjourning, board members thanked the students and families who attended and spoke about the financial challenges school systems are facing.
That wrapped up the meeting for the evening!
