CLARKSBURG - Harrison County Schools is proud to be recognized in a new statewide report for strong student growth in math after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2026 Education Recovery Scorecard named Harrison County as one of the districts “leading the way” in math recovery in West Virginia.
The report was created by researchers from Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth. It looked at how students across the country are recovering from pandemic learning loss.
As a State, West Virginia ranked 6th in the nation in math recovery and 8th in the nation in reading recovery.
The data shows positive progress for our District. From 2022 to 2025, Harrison County ranked higher than 79% of school districts nationwide for math score growth. This means our students showed stronger math growth than most districts in the nation with available data.
The report also found that our students are learning at a strong rate. From 2022 to 2025, Harrison County students learned an average of 0.97 grade levels per year in math and reading. That was higher than the West Virginia average of 0.91 and the average for similar districts at 0.89.
Harrison County also ranked higher than 53% of districts nationwide in average learning rates during the 2022-2025 school years.
While students across West Virginia are still working to return to pre-pandemic achievement levels, the report shows that learning has improved faster in West Virginia than in many other states since 2022.
Harrison County was listed alongside Upshur County and Ohio County as districts showing strong math performance.
Researchers said schools across the state have used several strategies to support student recovery, including high-quality curriculum, data-driven instruction, teacher training, science of reading literacy programs, and student support.
We are proud of the hard work of our students, teachers, staff, school leaders, and families. This progress reflects the daily commitment happening in classrooms across Harrison County Schools!
